Call for Nominations: 2012 Preservation Awards

As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, Historic Columbia Foundation is recognizing preservation and restoration accomplishments within our community as well. We are delighted to announce nominations are being accepted for the 2012 Preservation Awards, an annual event that recognizes the commendable efforts of both Columbia’s and Richland County’s citizens and their preservation projects. Nominations will be accepted through March 30, 2012.

This year leaders will be recognized  in the preservation of  local history with awards for preservation/restoration, adaptive use and new construction in a historic context. Awards will be presented to recipients at the Preservation Matters: 2012 Awards Reception at 701 Whaley on the evening of May 24. Categories and  2011 recipients are listed below. •    Preservation/Restoration

Trinity Cathedral, 1100 Sumter Street

Nominations in this category will be projects of historical significance restored to their original design.  An example would be a retail store, in an historic district, which continues to sell to the general public.

2011 recipients: Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Goodwill Plantation, Pine Grove Rosenwald School and Wesley United Methodist Church

•    Adaptive Use

Projects in this category will have been rehabilitated, while keeping many of the original elements; the structure will also incorporate new elements that will allow the structure to be used for a new function.  An example would be an old warehouse now being used as residential apartments or condominiums

2011 recipient: 601 Gervais Street/1218 Pulaski Street Complex

•    New Construction in an Historic Context

Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections USC Library

Nominations in this category will be new buildings placed in an historic district or adjacent to historic structures that complement the historic context.

2011 recipients: 601 Gervais Street/1218 Pulaski Street Complex, Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections, USC Library and Township Auditorium

Nominations should be limited to recent projects (completed in the last five years) and located in Columbia and Richland County.  Only completed projects will be considered. Please provide as much information as possible on the nomination form and return to our office, 1601 Richland Street, by Friday, March 30, 2012.
