Bringing history to life
Thanks to a grant from the Lipscomb Family Foundation, Historic Columbia is offering a comprehensive Field Study opportunity to 4th graders in Title I schools in Calhoun, Fairfield, Kershaw, and Orangeburg counties!
Included in this fully funded opportunity:
Reconstruction Traveling Trunk: A Historic Columbia education specialist will visit your school and teach students about economics, politics, and life during the Reconstruction Era, how Reconstruction impacted Southern society, and how Reconstruction ended using interactive activities.
Field Trip to the Museum of the Reconstruction Era at the Woodrow Wilson Family Home: Admission to this historic house museum is included with this field trip, as well as transportation to and from downtown Columbia. Please note lunch is not provided.
Day 1: Traveling Trunk
A Historic Columbia education specialist will visit your school and teach up to four one-hour long sessions to a maximum of 30 students per session. If the number of sessions exceeds four, an additional day of sessions may be booked. Educators will receive a digital copy of a lesson plan to use in advance of the trunk, which includes the materials needed for the lesson.
Reconstruction
This trunk, designed for 4th grade students, uses interactive activities to teach students about economics, politics, and life during the Reconstruction Era, how Reconstruction impacted Southern society, and how Reconstruction ended.

Day 2: Visit the Museum of the Reconstruction Era at the Woodrow Wilson Family Home in downtown Columbia.
Visit the nation's only museum dedicated to showcasing the post-Civil War Reconstruction period and is housed in South Carolina's only remaining presidential site civil rights in South Carolina. Historic Columbia can accommodate up to 48 students, plus one chaperone per ten students. If the number of students exceeds 48, multiple trips may be booked on different days.
Transportation costs are included, however, lunch is not provided.
The Museum of the Reconstruction Era
The Museum of the Reconstruction Era at the Woodrow Wilson Family Home is the nation's only museum dedicated to showcasing the post-Civil War Reconstruction period and is housed in South Carolina's only remaining presidential site. Through a multifaceted interpretation, The Museum of the Reconstruction Era interprets Columbia’s late 19th-century history in order to dispel the myths of Reconstruction that are so prevalent in society today.
