Richardson Square Marker
In 1972, state representative Samuel Manning introduced a bill rededicating the “pedestrian mall” just south of the State House in honor of his ancestor, Revolutionary War General Richard Richardson. Today’s Main Street was originally named Richardson Street in his honor, and the dedication of this portion of the street, closed in the 1970s to connect the State House grounds to the new complex of buildings to the south, was a reclamation of that earlier name.
