Lakeview National Register of Historic Places Listing
Description
In January 2019, Brookland Lakeview Empowerment Center (BLEC) personnel and Lakeview High School alumni sought out Historic Columbia’s assistance in determining goals and benchmarks necessary for establishing a museum highlighting the role Lakeview High School played as Lexington County’s only public high school for Black students from the 1920s through its closing in 1968. A meaningful and productive partnership between the organizations followed, with Historic Columbia hired as a preservation consultant tasked with nominating the former equalization school for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. A year of research, writing, and review culminated on January 31, 2023, with the Department of the Interior entering the historic school in the Register at the local level under Criterion A for Education and Ethnic Heritage/Black.
Since that time, Historic Columbia has continued to support BLEC and Lakeview alumni by providing museum design company HealyKohler Design with historical information gleaned from the National Register listing research process. Please contact Director of Preservation John Sherrer for more information regarding listing sites and districts in the National Register of Historic Places.
