Wednesday, November 15th 2023
Palladium presented Renovation Rodeo | Edgewood on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. Over 50 guests toured this former church while enjoying beer from Peak Drift Brewing Company, wine courtesy of Republic National Distributing Company, and delicious food from Something Small Catering. HC Palladium Board president Andrew Rogerson gave some opening remarks before guests went to explore the different short-term rental units within the building. This event was proudly sponsored by Courtney Miller with Coldwell Banker and Mark Tibshrany with Guild Mortgage.
Four times a year, Palladium features a property that has undergone—or is undergoing—an impressive renovation. From tiny 1940s bungalows to turn-of-the-century mansions, and everything in between, these events give you a chance to tour properties, learn about their renovation, and have a great time doing it. And they're FREE for our Palladium members!
Building History
2439 Read Street was sold in a tax sale in 1951. Bishop John H. Johnson of Philadelphia and founder of Bible Way church, came to Columbia that year to hold an annual meeting with the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, which was likely then located at 1308 Assembly Street.
An April 17, 1954 notice in The State indicated a new permit to build the church at 2439 Read Street: "The proposed building will be 62x155 feet with about 8,370 square feet of floor space. A new parsonage is included in the plans."
By 1955, Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, aka Holiness Church, was established at 2439 Read Street under Pastor Gurney Deneal (Dedneal).
In 1957, Brother Samuel Edwards applied for a zoning adjustment to allow for a family dwelling in the rear of the property.
About The Vestry
Completed in May 2023, the building sat vacant for about ten years prior to this adaptive reuse. Each of the five units is entirely unique, with its own style and mood from Art Deco, to Mid Century Modern, to Steam Punk. There are two units featuring three bedrooms and three bathrooms; one unit featuring two bedrooms and two bathrooms; and two units featuring one bedroom and one bathroom. Some of the units connect, and all have access to a shared lobby space. All of the units, as well as the entire building, are available to rent through Heartwood Furnished Homes.
