Join Historic Columbia Curator of History Becca Woodruff and University of South Carolina Distinguished Professor of History Mark Smith as they discuss the new exhibit, “Heat and Hardship: The Hidden Labor of Enslaved Cooks.” Funded by South Carolina Humanities, this exhibit relies heavily on audio and tactile interactives to give visitors a true sensory experience in the Robert Mills House. Woodruff and Smith will explore themes, research, and the implementation of new technology during this free webinar.
About Becca Woodruff
As the Curator of History at Historic Columbia, Becca Woodruff creates interpretation for HC’s public history projects and five historic house museums. She received her master’s degree in art history and museum studies from Case Western Reserve University and has a passion for decorative arts and material culture.
About Mark Smith
Mark Smith is the Director of the Institute for Southern Studies and Carolina Distinguished Professor of History at the University of South Carolina. He writes about the American South and the history of the senses. He recently published A Sensory History Manifesto, which is a brief and timely meditation on the field.

Knowledge at Noon provides fresh perspectives on Columbia’s rich history. This monthly virtual series delves into diverse topics such as archaeology and women's history, featuring Historic Columbia staff and local experts. Each session includes a forty-five-minute presentation followed by a Q-and-A. Attendance is free, but registration is required to receive the meeting link.
