This 1939 Colonial Revival house was built for Rufus Clarke (1900—1983) and his wife, Alice Childs Clark (1904—1982), by her father, the prominent Columbia architect James B. Urquhart (1876—1971). Clarke was a major league baseball pitcher in the 1920s for the Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles. He also served as the president of the Federal Land Bank of Columbia and as a Columbia city councilman.
