Lower Waverly

Established in the early twentieth century, Lower Waverly boasts diverse architectural styles and is protected as an architectural conservation district by the City of Columbia. Bounded by Gervais, King, Santee and Harden streets, this neighborhood was home to many professional and working-class African Americans who emerged as activists, educators and community leaders in the Civil Rights Movement.

During his photography sessions within various Columbia neighborhoods, Housing Authority inspector Joseph Winter trained his camera lens on people as well as buildings and streetscapes. This group of currently unidentified Lower Waverly teenagers posed for Winter on December 19, 1961 at what appears to be a church or community center.
