1511 Laurel Street
Sims-Stackhouse Mansion
Built before 1853 for James and Eliza Rebecca Sims, this imposing mansion once sat within the middle of the block (where 1517 Laurel rests now) and looked rather different. In 1909, Columbia banker T. B. Stackhouse bought the property, removed the floors above the home’s raised basement, and relocated them one parcel west to its current location. The South Carolina Federation of Women’s Clubs has maintained its state headquarters here since 1934, when Stackhouse bequeathed the home to the City of Columbia.
