City of Columbia Bicentennial Time Capsule
This four-ton granite marker rests atop a two-foot square steel time capsule buried to commemorate the City of Columbia’s 200th birthday. The capsule, coordinated by subcommittee chairman K. Douglas Cook, includes 500 items wrapped in plastic and donated by local citizens, including photographs and over 100 letters. Among the speakers at its burial was local historian Augustus T. Graydon, who contributed old newspapers and letters. It will be opened at Columbia’s Semiquincentennial on March 22, 2036.
