Capitol Complex Marker
1101 Pendleton StreetThis monument dedicates the southern half of the State House grounds to South Carolina Governor Robert Evander McNair. McNair was in office during the 1969-1981 expansion of the grounds, which added much-needed office and parking space for state agencies and officials. Local modern architecture firm Lyles, Bissett, Carlisle & Wolff designed the matching Brutalist style buildings and worked with Wilbur Smith and Associates on the site’s plan, including the underground parking facility and the closing of Main and Senate streets to traffic. Landscape architect Robert E. Marvin created a cohesive design that incorporated the new buildings with the existing monuments, plants, and walkways around the State House north of Senate Street.
