World War Memorial
The architectural firm of Lafaye and Lafaye designed this Neoclassical memorial, dedicated in 1935 to the men and women from South Carolina who served in World War I. The building itself has a mausoleum or tomb-like appearance that attempts to memorialize the lives lost during the war. Additionally, this building underscores the prevailing notion at that time that there would never be another world war. Interior marble inscriptions from former editors of The State newspaper memorialize those that gave their lives. Over the years the building has housed university offices and state agencies and is currently not open to the public.
