900 Sumter StreetUniversity of South Carolina Horseshoe
In 1827, the Clariosophic Literary Society, one of two debating societies at South Carolina College, commissioned a monument to be built in honor of Jonathan Maxcy, the first president of the college. Designed by Robert Mills, the renowned architect of the Washington Monument, the monument is one of the nation's earliest examples of the Egyptian Revival style.
