Construction for the main branch’s new facility began in 1991 as part of a $27 million dollar expansion that included upgrades to five other branches and the creation of two additional locations. Designed by Stevens and Wilkerson and built by M.B. Kahn Construction, the 242,000-square-foot structure boasts a 20,000-square-foot children’s room with a 46-foot-tall Maurice Sendak mural and a first-rate local history room. Richland Library was also awarded the 2017 National Medal from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for its outreach in several areas, including:
• Response to the October 2015 historic flooding
• Development of a social awareness task force
• Participating in the White House's ConnectED Challenge
